RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore
Eva Hodgson continued her torrid start the season as she turned in career-high 29 points, but the William & Mary women's basketball team's late comeback fell short as it lost for the first time this year at Richmond, 76-73, on Wednesday night.
Tied 58-58 early in the fourth quarter, Richmond (4-1) used a 9-0 run to take its largest lead midway through the period. Emma Squires opened the run with a free throw before Katie Klimkiewicz hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to four. After Jaide Hinds-Clarke scored on a put-back, Klimkiewicz hit another 3-ball to push the Spiders lead 67-58 with 6:53 left.
W&M (3-1) stormed back to tie the score at 71-71, thanks to a 13-4 run. Hodgson buried a three to start the comeback, but Richmond answered right away with a basket from Klimkiewicz. Hodgson restarted the rally with five straight points before senior
Victoria Reynolds' layup made it 69-68 with 3:53 left. The Spiders pushed their lead back to three, but W&M got free throws from Hodgson (two) and Reynolds (one) to level the score at 71-71 with 1:24 to play.
On the ensuing possession, Alex Parson hit a right-wing three to give the Spiders the lead for good. W&M was able to cut the lead back to one on a basket by freshman
Bre Bellamy with 15 seconds left, and the Spiders went just 2-of-4 from the line, but the Tribe's last two looks from three were off of the mark.
A back-and-forth game all night, W&M used a quick 6-0 run to start the second quarter to take its largest lead of the night. Back-to-back 3-pointers from redshirt sophomore
Sydney Wagner and redshirt junior
Harper Birdsong made it 27-20 with 6:32 to go in the first half.
