GREENVILLE, N.C. – Four players scored in double-figures and the William & Mary women's basketball team used a big third quarter to top East Carolina 78-68 on Tuesday night in Minges Coliseum. In the deciding quarter, W&M shot 10-for-14 from the field and increased a three-point lead to 12 points.
Leading by three at the break, W&M (3-0) scored the first seven points of the third quarter to push its lead double digits for the first time. Junior
Gabby Rogers opened the spurt with a lay-up in transition, before senior
Victoria Reynolds swished a right-wing 3-pointer, and sophomore
Eva Hodgson sunk a jumper to give the Tribe a 48-38 lead with 8:15 to go in the third quarter.
After East Carolina (1-2) opened the fourth quarter with a bucket, the Tribe reeled off six in a row and put the game all but out of reach. Hodgson opened the run with two free throws, before junior
Nyla Pollard added one from the line and freshman
Bre Bellamy sunk a 3-pointer to make it 73-57 with 5:34 left in regulation. ECU pushed the Tribe lead to single-digits twice in the final minute, but redshirt sophomore
Sydney Wagner and Hodgson combined to go 3-for-4 at the free throw line to preserve the victory.
Tied 11-11 midway through the first quarter, East Carolina used a 6-0 run to take its largest lead of the game. Necole Hope started the rally with a basket before Taniyah Thompson had a put-back and Ryann Evans added a basket to make it 17-11 with 2:13 left in the first quarter. However, the Tribe responded and after one the score was tied at 21-21.
Down by two, W&M used a 9-4 run to take a three-point halftime lead. A right-corner three from Wagner opened the run, before Reynolds added a lay-up. After a Pirate free throw, Hodgson canned a pair of her own from the stripe, before Reynolds added a steal in a lay-up to put the Tribe up six. ECU's LaShonda Monk, however, drained a near-half-court desperation 3-pointer to cut the score to 41-38 at halftime.
