WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Freshman midfielder
Alfredo Bozalongo's brace, including the game-winning free kick with 11 seconds left in the first OT period, propelled William & Mary men's soccer to its fourth win in a row, 2-1, over Elon on Wednesday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
After the Phoenix (3-7-1, 0-5 CAA) just missed the game-winner three minutes into overtime when striker Tuki Tayali lifted a shot from six-yards out off and over the crossbar, the Tribe (4-4-2, 2-1-1 CAA) found the golden goal in the final seconds of the extra time. Freshman
Alexander Levengood earned the free kick at the top of the arc while warding off an Elon defender. Bozalango took the chance and buried it into the upper left corner of the goal, igniting a Tribe celebration.
Elon had the better of play in the opening 45 minutes and found the first marker of the match with just 10 minutes remaining in the first period. Mattias Cooper collected a failed clearance along the right side of the 18 after pressuring the Tribe defense. The freshman midfielder played a centering ball to the top of the box, and fellow rookie Burl Shepherd blasted it home just off the finger tips of Tribe goalkeeper
Kieran Baskett and into the right side of the net.
The Green and Gold found the equalizer in the 68th minute thanks to Bozalongo's first career tally. Off a throw-in, senior
Reeves Trott earned a free kick holding off a defender and being pushed down from behind. Just outside the top right corner of the penalty area, 20 yards from goal, Bozalongo bent the free kick opportunity around the near post to draw the Tribe even at one.
