WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – William & Mary men's soccer fell on the road at No. 4-ranked Wake Forest on Tuesday night. The Demon Deacons tallied a trio of first-half goals over a near 15-minute stretch and added two more in the second half to pick up the victory.
Wake Forest (11-2, 4-1 ACC) scored twice over the a four-minute span midway through the first half to take control. Bruno Lapa converted a penalty kick in the 22nd minute to get the Demon Deacons on the board. Calvin Harris doubled the lead in the 26th minute, finishing inside the near post from 10 yards out after a nice slicing run and threading pass from Aristotle Zarris.
Zarris sent up the third Wake Forest goal in the 36th minute, and Kyle Holcomb scored from a tough angle. Holcomb made a nice touch off the Zarris pass to split two defenders and scored inside the near post upper 90 just off the fingertips of freshman goalkeeper
Kieran Baskett from eight yards out.
The best Tribe (4-6-2, 2-1-1 CAA) chance came in the 65th minute as sophomore
John Eberle laid the ball off to classmate
Derin Kokuuslu at the top of the box. His shot caught a deflection off the boot of a Deacs defender and appeared destined to fall into the near-side post, but Andrew Pannenberg made the diving save to push it wide.
Wake Forest added a pair of goals in the 73rd minute to provide the final margin. Nico Benalcazar scored off the corner kick before Holcomb notched his second of the night on a volley off a Tribe turnover to provide the final margin.
