The William & Mary field hockey team brought its season-long homestand to a successful conclusion on Friday night, coming back from an early deficit to beat Hofstra, 4-2. The Tribe won its third in a row to improve to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while the Pride fell to 5-7 and 0-2 in league play.
How it Happened
- Although the Tribe held the advantage in shots, 7-3, in the first quarter, the Pride were the first ones on the board following a penalty corner early in the 10th minute. Cami Larsson had her shot deflect up off a defender, and Frankie O'Brien smacked it out of the air at the near post and in for the 1-0 lead.
- W&M controlled the pace of play for much of the first quarter, and as the second quarter got underway, turned up the pressure even more, holding the ball in te midfield.
- The Tribe finally broke through in the 25th minute, as junior
Ashley Drum (Virginia Beach, Va.) wove through the defense and took a shot from high in the circle that blasted past the goalkeeper and in to tie the match, 1-1. It was Drum's first career goal.
- As has become standard, the third quarter was where W&M blew the game open, out-shooting Hofstra 12-1. After peppering the goalkeeper with four shots in the space of a minute, the Tribe earned a corner early in the 34th minute. Senior captain
Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.) took a shot from the initial set, and fellow senior
Cassidy Goodwin (Midlothian, Va.) redirected it past the goalkeeper and into the net to take a 2-1 lead.
- W&M kept pushing, and scored again in the 41st minute. Senior
Woodard Hooper (Williamsburg, Va.) drove in along the baseline, and as the defense collapsed to her and the goalkeeper stepped to block her path, she found junior
Haley Hopkins (Springfield, Va.) unmarked two yards off the goal-line for the score.
- The Tribe's final goal came early in the fourth quarter, off another penalty corner in the 47th minute. It was van de Kamp again with the shot, this time deflecting low off a defender's stick and in. Credited with assists were senior captain
Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.), who tied the program record with her 25th career assist, and sophomore J
orja Morgan (Wakerley, Queensland, Australia) who provided the set-up.
- Hofstra kept trying to claw back into the match, and got their second goal in a penalty corner in the 57th minute. Larsson got the goal on a sweep into the high corner, with assists to Frankie O'Brien and Madison Warfel.
