WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Jan. 26, 2019) – The William & Mary men's gymnastics team posted its best score of the season and claimed four individual event titles but fell to Navy, 394.25-390.6, in its home opener at Kaplan Arena on Saturday.
Freshman
Andrew Lyubovsky highlighted the Tribe's individual efforts and won titles on parallel bars (13.75) and high bar (13.1), while seniors
Jacopo Gliozzi (14.5) and
David Watkins (14.1) earned the meet's top scores on pommel horse and rings, respectively.
En route to posting its best team score of the 2019 campaign, W&M recorded season highs on pommel horse (65.8), parallel bars (65.2) and high bar (61.5).
Event Highlights
Floor, 64.35 – Sophomore
Cutter Fugett placed second on floor (13.5) to lead the Tribe, while freshman
Kevin Portofee and sophomore
Ian Creelman tallied a 12.9 and 12.85. respectively.
Pommel Horse, 65.8 – Gliozzi earned a season-high 14.5 to win pommel horse for the second week in a row and helped W&M record a season high in the event.
Rings, 65.45 – Watkins (14.1) and Gliozzi (13.55) claimed the top two spots on rings, as Watkins earned the rings title for the second consecutive week.
Vault, 68.3 – Senior
Jack Hasenkopf (14.05) and sophomore
Collin Lillie (14.0) led the way on vault and placed second and third, respectively.
Parallel Bars, 65.2 – Led by Lyubovsky's winning effort (13.75), W&M defeated the Mids on parallel bars by posting a season-high score in the event. Junior
Tomas Palma (13.25), Creelman (13.0) and Fugett (12.95) also contributed to the team total.
High Bar, 61.5 – Lyubovsky also won the high bar title (13.1) en route to helping the Tribe record a season-high score in the event.
