Cold Shooting Troubles Women's Basketball in Setback at James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's basketball team couldn't over come a season-low shooting performance as it fell at James Madison 65-48 in Harrisonburg, Va. on Friday night. With the result, the Tribe falls to 10-7, 3-3 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Dukes improve to 14-4, 6-1 in league action.
 
JMU opened the game with a 10-2 run and took the lead by the same score. Kamiah Smalls opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, before Devon Merrit hit a lay-up. Sophomore Gabby Rogers answered with a jumper, but Kayla Cooper-Williams hit a lay-up and Jackie Benitez added a triple to end the run.
 
The Dukes extended its lead to its largest, 21 points, with a quick 5-0 run late in the second quarter. Lexie Barrier started the run with a jumper, and Logan Reynolds scored on a fast-break lay-up. Both Barrier and Elano Marciszwski spilt free throws to make it 32-11 with 58 seconds left in the half. The Tribe did answer with four straight from senior Bianca Boggs to make it 32-15 at the break.
 
W&M clawed within 13 points at the end of the third quarter, but that was as close as it could cut the deficit. The Tribe got four straight free throws from junior Victoria Reynolds and freshman Eva Hodgson to make it 49-36 with nine seconds left in the third quarter.

Individual Highlights
Freshman Eva Hodgson scored a game-high 13 points to lead the way for the Tribe. The freshman added four rebounds, an assist, and a steal in the contest. Redshirt sophomore Harper Birdsong was the only other Tribe player in double-figures with 12 points. Senior Bianca Boggs just missed a double-double as she had eight points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
 
Kamiah Smalls led three Dukes in double-figures with 11 points and added five rebounds, and two steals. Lexie Barrier and Devon Merrit each chipped in 10 points in the victory. Barrier added seven boards, two blocks, and three steals, while Merritt had five rebounds and two blocks.
 
Inside the Numbers
- The Tribe shot a season-low 26-percent (13-for-50) from the floor in the game. W&M has shot below 35-percent for just the third time this season, and all three have resulted in losses.
 
- W&M was a perfect 16-for-16 from the free throw line in the contest.
 
- James Madison won the battle of the glass, 46-30.

Freshman Eva Hodgson was in double-figures for the seventh time as she finished with 13 points … Redshirt sophomore Harper Birdsong scored 12 points and was in double-figures for the 11th time this season … Senior Bianca Boggs tied a career-high 11 rebounds in the game.
