Balanced Attack Leads Women's Basketball to 65-60 Victory Over Defending CAA Champion Elon

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's basketball team used a 15-3 run to end third quarter and start the fourth to topple defending Colonial Athletic Association Champion Elon 65-60 at Kaplan Arena on Sunday afternoon. With the triumph, the Tribe improves to 10-6, 3-2 in CAA action, while the Phoenix falls to 7-9, 2-3 in league play.

Trailing by five, W&M caught fire to build a seven-point cushion with 6:11 left in the game. Freshman Emma Krause opened the run with a top of the key 3-pointer, before senior Bianca Boggs split a pair from the line to make it 51-50 at the end of three quarters. Boggs gave the Tribe the lead for good as she drove to the basket for two, before Reynolds hit a jumper to make it 54-51. Elon had a free throw and a basket on its next two possessions, but the Tribe answered with a redshirt sophomore Harper Birdsong jumper, and a left wing triple from senior Misha Jones 3-pointer to push its lead to 61-54 with 6:11 left in regulation.

Although, the Tribe went cold down the stretch, missing its last six shots from the field, it hit 4-of-its-last-6 from the free throw line to hold off Elon's late push and pick up a 65-60 lead.

Elon used a strong third quarter to build its lead to as many as five in the frame. Down by eight, the Phoenix used a 9-0 run to take its first lead since the first quarter. Saadia Munford opened the run with a jumper, before Emily Maupin scored and Jaylin Powell converted a traditional 3-point play to make it a one-point game. On the ensuing possession, Elon regained the lead on an Ariel Colon jumper with 5:40 left in the third quarter.

W&M opened a 13-point cushion with a quick 5-0 run early in the second quarter. Birdsong buried a triple, before sophomore Gabby Rogers hit a lay-up to make it 27-14 with 6:07 left in the opening half.
