Women's Basketball Suffers Sunday Setback to Charleston

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's basketball used a 5-0 run to level the score midway through the fourth quarter, but Charleston closed the game on 15-3 run to pick up a 66-54 victory at Kaplan Arena on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Tribe (9-6, 2-2 CAA) evened the score with 6:24 remaining in regulation. Senior Misha Jones opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back 3-pointer to bring W&M within two, 48-46. After a Charleston 3-pointer, sophomore Nyla Pollard and senior Bianca Boggs provided five unanswered points for a tie game at 51-51.
 
However, CofC's Baileigh Larson ignited a late run that put the contest away. Larson scored eight points in a 10-0 spark to give the Cougars (5-9, 1-2 CAA) a 61-51 advantage with 2:11 remaining. The Cougars went on to knock down five of six free throws in the final 90 seconds.
 
In the first half, W&M was down by as many as nine points before going on a 9-0 run halfway through the second quarter. A streak of three-consecutive 3-pointers knotted up the score, 27-27, with 4:31 left in the first half. Redshirt sophomore Harper Birdsong buried a corner triple to ignite the run. Senior Bianca Boggs and junior Victoria Reynolds then took advantage of clean looks from beyond the arc to even the score. However, the Cougars outscored the Tribe 4-2 in the remaining 2:47 to take a 31-29 advantage at halftime.

Individual Leaders
Senior Bianca Boggs was the lone Tribe player in double-figures as she finished with a game-high 18 points and added eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Junior Victoria Reynolds had a strong all-around game as the she finished with eight points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, four steals, and a block. Sophomore Nyla Pollard finished nine points for the second straight game and added four assists.
 
Baliegh Larson led the Cougars with 16 points and seven rebounds as she was one of four Cougars in double-figures. Madison Taylor chipped in 12 points, while Darien Huff had 11 and Deja Ford finished with 10 points. Bri Sullivan added 10 boards for CofC.
 
Inside the Numbers
- W&M shot just 33.9-percent (20-of-59) from the floor in the contest. It was just the second time this season the Tribe has shot less than 35-percent, and both games have resulted in setbacks.
 
- Charleston held a 44-18 advantage in points in the paint, and out rebounded the Tribe 46-35.
 
-  W&M, the best free throw shooting team in the CAA coming into the game, was just 4-of-12 for 33-percent from the stripe today.
 
Notes
Senior Bianca Boggs was in double-figures for the seventh straight game and the 13th time this season … Boggs now has 55 career double-digit performances … The senior has 1,188 career points and now is 28 away from passing Julie Sommer Leach '99 for 12th all-time in school history … Junior Victoria Reynolds had her third double-digit rebounding game of the season and the seventh of her career.
