RALEIGH, N.C. – The William & Mary men's soccer team scored early, but newly minted No. 4 NC State answered just after halftime and found the game-winner in the second overtime period on Monday night at Dail Soccer Stadium. Senior
Ryder Bell scored his team-leading third goal of the season in the six minute, but Christoph Schneuwly's volley off a rebound in the 103rd minute gave NC State its fourth-straight win to open the year.
The Tribe (1-3) quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead, scoring just 5:28 into the contest. Along the left side of the attacking third, senior
Antonio Bustamante quickly flipped as pass forward and set Bell free into the box. The senior strike took a positive touch and scored from a tough angle at the near post on the left side.
Freshman goalkeeper
Connor Andrews came up with a pair of big stops in the opening 45 minutes to send W&M to the locker room with a 1-0 lead. The rookie keeper denied Clayton Sparks on a breakaway chance in the 10th minute, before blocking a David Norris penalty kick in the 39th minute.
NC State equalized just 1:20 into the second half off a free kick. Manny Perez got a boot to Gabriel Machado's service inside the six to knot it at one.
Last season, W&M scored three minutes into the first OT period to down NC State, but this season, the Wolfpack found the winner three minutes into the second extra session. Off a corner kick, Perez settled in the 18-yard box, but the Tribe defense blocked his shot. The rebound fell to Schneuwly, and he volleyed it home for the winner.
