WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Senior
Antonio Bustamante netted the golden goal off of a free kick in the 109th minute to cap an exciting rally as the William & Mary men's soccer team topped Longwood, 3-2, on Tuesday night at Albert-Daly Field at Martin Family Stadium. The Tribe (2-3) scored twice in the final five minutes to rally from a two-goal deficit, before the game-winner in double OT.
With his three-point night on a goal and an assist, Bustamante moved into the Tribe's career top 10 with 78 points over hte last four seasons.
After allowing a pair of first-half goals, the magic started when W&M got one back in the 86th minute off of a corner kick. With ball bouncing around in the box, freshman
Devin McCarthy played a pass off to his right to senior
Ryder Bell, and the senior striker buried his shot inside the right post to narrow the deficit to one.
Just 88 seconds later the Tribe leveled the score. Freshman
John Andrew Eskay raced down the left side of the pitch before playing the ball to Bustamante. The senior midfielder perfectly placed a cross to the head of sophomore
Sam Golan, and he flicked a header inside the right post to knot the contest at 2-2.
Bustamante found the winner in the 109th minute. After Bell was fouled just outside of the box, the reigning CAA Player of the Year lined his free kick up from about 20-yards out and lined a shot inside the right post to give the Tribe the victory.
Longwood (2-3) took advantage of two Tribe miscues to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. In the sixth minute, Ander Extaniz took control of the loose ball at the top of the penalty area and found Sherif Maalouf, who placed his chance in the right corner of the goal to put the Lancers on the board. LU doubled its lead thanks to a Josh Hanratty penalty kick in the 39th minute.
