HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The William & Mary men's soccer team suffered a 4-0 setback at Hofstra on Saturday night. The Pride (5-3-3, 2-0-1 CAA) scored three times over a 10-minute first-half stretch, including two from Matthew Vowinkel, before adding a second-half marker to extend its unbeaten streak to seven.
W&M (2-5-1, 0-1-1 CAA) had a couple quality opportunities early, but both junior
Julian Ngoh and senior
Antonio Bustamante's chances in the sixth and 24th minutes, respectively, were stopped by Hofstra goalkeeper Alex Ashton. The Pride struck first in the 27th minute off a long throw-in. Sean Nealis controlled the long throw and fed George O'Malley who snuck it past Tribe goalkeeper
Connor Andrews from six yards out.
Matthew Vowinkel scored twice in a 3:36 stretch to push the Hofstra lead to 3-0. In the 34th minute, Marcus Lindqvist served a long ball from the left wing into area, and Vowinkel volleyed it inside the left post. Less than four minutes later, Vowinkel headed home an Oscar Ramsay free kick into the right side of the frame.
The Tribe tallied four shots, including two on goal, in the opening four minutes of second half in an attempt to close the gap. Bustamante had a pair of great opportunities, including a free kick that was cleared off the line by a Hofstra defender. Junior
Cole Smith's follow-up header was pushed wide by Ashton.
The Pride found its fourth goal in the 55th minute to put the goal away. Following a cleared-out corner kick, Jacob Goker found Luke Brown in the middle of the area, and the Hofstra junior scored inside the right post.
