Men's Soccer Battles Back, but Falls in OT at ODU

NORFOLK, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer rallied to force overtime with a goal in the 85th minute, but Old Dominion's Niko Klosterhalfen headed home the golden goal for a 3-2 Monarch victory. Junior Reeves Trott celebrated his birthday on Wednesday night with a goal and an assist for the Tribe (2-6-1), but Klosterhalfen scored two of ODU's (6-3-1) goals to lead the home side to the victory.

An ODU miscue led to the Tribe to an early 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the contest. Trott pounced on a Monarch turnover and carried into the box, drawing out the ODU goalkeeper. He laid off to Bustamante who scored into an open net from six yards out.

Old Dominion equalized in the 34th minute. Off a failed clearance, Max Wilschrey deflected the ball to Daniel Corona, leaving him 1-on-1 with Tribe goalkeeper Sam Onyeador. Corona scored upper 90 into the left side from 10 yards out for his second goal in as many matches.

W&M turned up the pressure to start the second half, but it was the Monarchs that struck to take a 2-1 lead in the 66th minute. Wilschrey fed to Klosterhalfen just inside the top of the 18-yard box, and the Monarch midfielder scored off the underside of the crossbar into the left side of the frame.

The Tribe had a golden chance in the 68th minute as an ODU defender was whistled for a handball in the box. Bustamante took the penalty kick for the Green and Gold, but ODU goalkeeper Mertcan Akar smothered the shot, diving to his right.

The Tribe's offensive pressure paid off in the 85th minute as Trott pulled the visitors even. Freshman John Andrew Eskay tried a shot from the left side of the area, but the chance was headed wide of the frame. Golan collected the attempt and knocked it to Trott, who toe poked it into the middle of the fame from eight yards out.

In overtime, the Monarchs cashed in their second corner kick chance of extra time and eighth overall on the night. Deniz Dogan served in the corner kick to the near post where Klosterhalfen rose and sent a header just off the glove of Onyeador into the back of the net.
