WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer team opened Colonial Athletic Association play with a 1-1 draw at Elon on Wednesday night. After the contest was delayed more than an hour by lightning, freshman
Devin McCarthy gave W&M (2-4-1, 0-0-1) a 1-0 lead with a goal in the final minute of the first half. The Phoenix (3-4-1, 0-1-1) scored less than 20 minutes into the second half to knot it, and the match remained even through the remainder of the 110 minutes.
W&M scored with less than a minute left in the opening half to take a 1-0 lead into the locker room. After redshirt freshman
Derin Kokuuslu won the ball in midfield, rookie
Zachary Hosseinian ran onto a deflected pass, before leading McCarthy free into the penalty area. The Tribe freshman beat Elon goalkeeper Matthew Jegier to the ball, sliding and chipping a shot inside the left post from 10 yards out with just 10 seconds remaining in the half.
The Phoenix pulled even in the 62nd minute off a long throw-in. Hassan Pinto placed the long throw into the middle of the penalty area where Inigo Bronte fought off a Tribe defender and scored into the center net from just outside the six.
Elon outshot the Tribe on the night, 14-10, but the Tribe had the better of play in the overtime periods. Freshman
John Andrew Eskay registered four of the Tribe's five shots in the extra 20 minutes. While W&M held a 5-1 advantage in shots during the OT periods, Elon's defense held strong to forge the tie.
