WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer team was unfortunate to not find a goal in the opening 45 minutes, and No. 24 Coastal Carolina scored a twice in the second half to pull out a 2-0 victory at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Friday night. W&M (2-4) was twice denied by the woodwork, including an apparent goal cleared off the line, while Yazeed Matthews' rebound goal in the 78th minute provided the difference for the Chanticleers (4-1).
The Tribe, which was shorthanded with five starters sidelined due to injury, enjoyed the better of play in the opening 45 minutes, outshooting CCU, 10-4. Senior Antonio Bustmante was denied by the crossbar in the 37th minute as he flicked chance from eight yards out that rang off the bar.
Four minutes later, W&M caught a tough break when a golden chance was not ruled over the goal line. Bustamante flicked a cross into the box where redshirt junior
Cole Smith turned a header off the left post that looked destined to be over the line. At the last second, Coastal keeper Chris Datallo cleared the ball off the line.
The Chants found its footing in the second half and scored the match's first goal in the 78th minute. Freshman goalkeeper
Connor Andrews did well to block a Carlos Becerra shot from the top left corner of the 18 with a diving stab. The rebound spilled over to Matthews who settled and poked it home into the right side of the net.
Coastal added to its lead thanks to an own goal in the 89th minute. With the Tribe pressing forward, Morten Timm started a counter attacked and streak towards the left side endline. Timm sent a cross into the area, but it was deflected into the back of the net to provide the final 2-0 scoreline.
