The No. 22-ranked William & Mary field hockey team weathered an early storm from Lafayette on Sunday, taking firm control over the final 40 minutes to win convincingly, 4-1. The Tribe improved to 1-2 on the year with the victory, while the Leopards fell to 0-3 overall.
How it Happened
- The Leopards came out hungry, and had the advantage of possession for much of the first half including three penalty corners and eight shots. However,
Morgan Connor (Bedford, N.Y.) and the Tribe defense stood strong, denying all attempts even when playing down a player for a five-minute yellow card.
- In the 29th minute, W&M broke through to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore
Ella Donahue (Midlothian, Va.) passed across the top of the circle to find redshirt-senior
Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW, Australia), who ripped a shot over the standing goalkeeper and tucked in just under the crossbar for her first goal of the year.
- Just a few minutes later, Lafayette responded as Molly McAndrew drove in from the right side and took a shot from high in the circle that took a hard angle past Connor and into the boards to tie the match 1-1 with 3:30 left in the half.
- The Green and Gold was not content to head into halftime even, however, and scored the go-ahead goal with one second left on the clock. Junior
Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.), who's been having a strong weekend, dribbled along the top of the circle and poked a pass forward to classmate
Woodard Hooper (Reston, Va.). Hooper was able to put the keeper on one hip and smartly tap the ball past on the other side and in for her second goal of the weekend.
- In the second half, Lafayette again applied early pressure, but was unable to crack the Tribe defensive set, and once the breakout went the other way, William & Mary assumed control of play and held it for the rest of the match.
- In the 44th minutes, Hughes scored her second goal of the match, taking a feed from sophomore
Ashley Drum (Virginia Beach, Va.) and lofting her shot over Lafayette's keeper again for the 3-1 advantage.
- The final score of the game came in the 53rd minute, and once again Hughes was instrumental to the play. She got the ball on the baseline and drove in, drawing the defense to her. The redshirt-senior then passed the ball along the open goal-mouth and found sophomore
Caitlin Maclean (Devizes, Wiltshire, England) open at the back post for the tap-in goal, the first of her career.
