The William & Mary field hockey overcame a pair of one-goal deficits and survived two minutes of 6v4 hockey in golden-goal play to rally past Brown, 4-3, in double-overtime on Friday night. With the win, its second in a row, the Tribe evens its record at 2-2 on the year, while the Bears fell to 1-2 overall.
How it Happened
- W&M overcame a pair of one-goal first-half deficits to step aside 2-2 at the break. Gina Openshaw scored in the fifth minute and again in the 32nd to put Brown ahead, but both times, the Tribe rally to even.
- W&M's first goal came courtesy of freshman
Jorja Morgan (Wakerley, QLD, Australia), after she took a pass from
Cassidy Goodwin (Gloucester, Va.) and powered her shot in the left side of the goal in the 21st minute.
- In the final minute before the half, redshirt-senior
Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW, Australia) scored her third goal of the last two matches, taking a cross from
Caitlin Maclean (Devizes, Wiltshire, England) and firing a shot straight down the middle of the goal.
- The second half started with the Tribe controlling play and pelting the Brown goal, finally breaking through to take the lead for the first time in the 46th minute. Once again it was Hughes, taking a long pass from senior
Caroline Arrowood (Chesapeake, Va.) before sweeping the ball into goal for her second of the night.
- Brown would answer off a penalty corner in the 56th minute, as Anagha Nayak tipped in a pass from Rachel Lanouette at the post to even the scorer 3-3. That's how regulation ended, and sent W&M to extra time for the second time in the last three games.
- The Tribe dominated the first overtime, taking a 5-0 lead in shots. Brown goalie Katie Hammaker stood strong, however, making four saves to keep the game tied. W&M was put under pressure towards the end of the first 10 minutes, as over-lapping cards meant the Green and Gold only had four field players to counter six for the Bears for the final 75 seconds. Despite that, the final two shots of the period both were taken by W&M.
- Still down two players for the first 45 seconds of the second overtime, W&M kept up the pace and out-worked their opponents for the win. Brown took its only shot of overtime 30 seconds in, but freshman
Kimi Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) was there to make the save. On the other end of the field, a Tribe penalty corner was turned away at the end of the 84th minute, but in the re-start afterwards, Hughes completed her hat trick on a pass from
Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.) to give W&M the win.
