WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer team fell to No. 12 North Carolina, 6-1, on Friday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. Junior
Julian Ngoh tallied the lone goal for W&M (1-2), while the Tar Heels (2-1) scored three times in each half, including two apiece from Nils Bruening and Giovanni Montesdeoca.
North Carolina took the early lead with a goal in the 15th minute on a nice individual effort from Mauricio Pineda. After stealing the ball from a Tribe defender, Pineda raced into the penalty area before ripping his shot into the middle right side of the goal.
Six minutes later the Tar Heels doubled its lead off of a free kick in the 21st minute. From the left side of the 18-yard box, Jack Skahan played the ball perfectly off the head of Nils Bruening, whose glancing header found the lower right corner of the net. Bruening added his second of the night on a volley inside the penalty area in the 32nd minutes to send the Tar Heels to the locker room with a 3-0 lead.
The Tribe got on the board in the 80th minute. Senior
Antonio Bustamante intercepted a pass in the midfield and set Ngoh free into the attacking area. The junior rocketed his shot inside of the far post.
Montesdeoca played a role in all three second-half Tar Heel goals. He scored on a breakaway in the 59th minute and answered W&M's goal with one off a turnover just over a minute later. Montesdeoca set up the final marker of the night just 18 seconds later, laying off a pass to Alex Rose in the box. Rose lifted a shot into the upper 90 of the goal from 12 yards out.
