The No. 22 William & Mary field hockey team put on a show Friday night in the home opener against Old Dominion, scoring three goals before falling in overtime, 4-3. The Tribe moves to 0-2 early in the season, while the Lady Monarchs improved to 3-0 on the year.
How it Happened
- ODU held the first-half advantage in possession and shots, 6-2, but it was W&M that took the early lead out of a corner in the 10th minute. Junior
Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.) tipped a shot under the Old Dominion keeper, and classmate
Woodard Hooper (Reston, Va.) was there to clean up on the ball and score her first of the year.
- The second half saw possession tip over to the Green and Gold, with a 10-7 advantage in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corners. Off another of those corners, W&M scored again in the 40th minute to take a 2-0 lead. Out of another corner, junior captain
Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.) found Snead lurking behind the goalkeeper, and Snead scored to extend the lead.
- In the final seven minutes, the Lady Monarchs finally found the last pass that they had been missing all game. At the start of the 64th minute, after
Morgan Connor (Bedford, N.Y.) stopped the initial shot on a corner, the rebound fell to Alexandria Brewer at the near post and she was able to slip the ball through for the score.
- 45 seconds later, ODU scored again, tying the match 2-2. Merle Knobloch dribbled the ball into the circle and was able to fine Ilse Westera on the backside of the play for the score.
- In the 67th minute, Knobloch and Westera again connected, after first collecting a rebound from another Connor save and passing through to the near post to put ODU in the lead, 3-2.
- W&M had two corner opportunities as time expired in regulation, and made the second one count. The ball found its way from Snead to freshman
Cara Menges (Richmond, Va.), who set up perfectly for van de Kamp to knock home and send the game into overtime tied 3-3.
- In the 7v7 extra time, ODU outshot the Tribe 4-0 despite some good possession for W&M, and was finally able to break through on a pass from Knobloch deep in the corner to Erin Huffman up top. Huffman's shot skipped off Connor's pads and in in the 77th minute.
