Women's Soccer Drops Home Opener to No. 7 Virginia

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's soccer team dropped its home opener 3-0 to No. 7 Virginia at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Thursday night in Williamsburg. With the decision, the Tribe falls to 0-3, while the Cavaliers remain unbeaten at 3-0.

Brianna Westrup put the Cavaliers on the board in the 15th minute. W&M goalkeeper junior Katelyn Briguglio couldn't handle the UVA senior defender's shot from distance as it bounced in off a deflection.

Just over two minutes into the second half, the Tribe nearly pulled even. Redshirt junior Sarah Segan sent a cross to the backside of the six from the left wing, but sophomore Mackenzie Kober's shot to the near post was denied on a Laurel Ivory diving save.

Sydney Zandi doubled the Cavalier lead in the 54th minute. Ayan Adu found her sophomore teammate on the right side of the 18, and she finished with a low shot just inside the left post.

The Tribe just missed another scoring chance in the 64th minute as Ivory was once again up the task. Senior Arundel Miguelez found redshirt sophomore Stephanie Arens with a threading pass through the midfield, and she set sophomore Courtney Miles free into the 18. UVa's keeper Ivory blocked Miles chances from eight yards out to keep W&M off the board.

Alissa Gorzak scored the capper for UVa with just three minutes remaining, hammering home a shot from 10 yards out.  Ashlynn Serepca set the play up, beating the defense to the endline, before sending a cross to the backside of the 18.
