WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 8, 2018)—The William & Mary lacrosse team was edged by Hofstra in overtime, 15-14, in its Colonial Athletic Association opener at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Sunday afternoon.
W&M (4-8, 0-1) held HU (7-5, 1-1) to just one goal in the final 19:28 of regulation to rally back from a four-goal deficit and send the contest into overtime before HU's Katie Whelan scored the game-winner with 1:06 remaining in the initial frame of the extra session.
The Tribe trailed at halftime, 9-4, but opened the second half with a 5-0 run in the opening 6:05 to tie the score. A trio of goals by
Meredith Hughes were bookended with scores by
Sophie Kopec. Two of Hughes' goals were separated by just 0:08, which ranks tied for the second-fastest back-to-back goals in CAA history.
Hofstra responded with a 4-0 run of its own before W&M closed regulation by scoring five of the final six goals.
Abby Corkum provided the tying score off an assist from
Eloise Gagnon with 1:25 showing. W&M won the ensuing draw and recorded three shots, including one on goal, but was unable to find the back of the cage before the clock expired.
Although Hofstra won the opening draw in overtime, the teams traded turnovers before the final goal.
Tribe Standouts
Kopec led W&M with a career-high five goals, while Hughes (4g, career high) and Corkum (2g, 2a) added four points apiece.
McKinley Wade also proved a pair of scores.
Hannah Ryan (4 DC, 4 CT, 4 GB) and
Cameron MacDonald (4 DC, 3 GB, 2 CT) also posted impressive all-around performances.
Goalie
Elsa Rall came off the bench and allowed just two goals in 20:48 and totaled five saves.
Inside the Numbers
In addition to closing regulation with a 5-1 run to send the game into overtime, W&M outscored HU, 10-5, in the second half.
The Tribe's 5-0 run to begin the second half covered a span of just 4:25, while the ensuing 4-0 Hofstra spurt lasted just 3:32.
W&M outshot HU, 33-29, and held a 20-19 edge in ground balls.
The Pride owned a 17-14 advantage in draw controls, while both teams committed 17 turnovers.
The Opposition
Drew Shapiro (3g, 1a) and Alexa Mattera (3g, 1a) led Hofstra with four points apiece, while Mattera added a game-high seven draw controls.
Carlee Ancona posted a team-high four caused turnovers, while Amanda Seekamp recorded a team-best five ground balls.
Notes
The contest marked the fourth time in the last seven meetings between W&M and HU that the outcome has been decided in overtime … W&M is now 2-2 in those games … Kopec's five goals are the most by a Tribe player in a game this season … W&M is now 4-2 at home this season.
