Hunter Smith Provides 10th-Inning Walk-Off to Lift Baseball Over Radford

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary baseball team split its two-game mid-week series against Radford in thrilling fashion by claiming a 3-2 victory in 10 innings on Wednesday.  With two outs, junior Hunter Smith delivered a walk-off RBI double to lead the Tribe (4-10) past the Highlanders (4-9).

It was a deadlock affair the majority of the afternoon as both teams exchanged one-run innings early and late in the contest. Smith blasted a solo shot down the left field line in the first, before Radford's Andrew Szamski responded with an RBI double in the top of the second.

The Highlanders claimed a 2-1 advantage in the seventh after driving in a two-out run, but the Tribe evened the contest in the bottom half of the frame. Junior Colin Lipke launched W&M's second home run to left field for the 2-all tie.

In the top of the eighth, RU had runners on second and third base with one out, but senior Michael Toner fanned the last two batters to get out of the jam. Both teams went without a hit with no men on base in the ninth inning to send to ball game to extras.

Sophomore Wade Strain was clutch in the top of the 10th as the Highlanders threatened to plate the go-ahead run. Colby Higgerson hit a lead-off single and moved up on a passed ball. Kyle Butler drew a walk on the next at bat, before a wild pitch advanced him and Higgerson. However, Strain didn't flinch and struck out the side to shut the door on the rally attempt.

In the bottom half of the 10th, back-to-back one-out singles from juniors Owen Socher and Nick Butts sparked the walk-off bid. Following the second out, Smith made the play of the game with a booming double to right center, plating Socher for the game-winning run.

Tribe Standouts
Smith finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBI and was a triple away from hitting for the cycle. Senior Ryan Hall had a solid performance after going 2-for-4 with a double. Lipke was responsible for the other RBI due to his solo homer.

On the mound, sophomore Michael Goldak tossed four effective innings as he struck out a pair and allowed four hits and just one run (earned). Strain pick up the win after shutting out Radford in the last two innings.
