William & Mary freshman
Jake Kealy (Wilton, Conn.) was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Men's Swimming Rookie of the Year on Thursday, following a vote of the league's coaches. Kealy is the fifth Tribe swimmer to win the award in the last seven years, and joins teammates
Evan Baker (Chantilly, Va.) and
Colin Wright (Williamsburg, Va.) as active winners. The Rookie of the Year award was announced as part of the CAA's full slate of award winners, which also included head coach
Matt Crispino '02 as the Swimming Coach of the Year, which was previously announced at the conclusion of the CAA Championships last month.
Kealy had a strong season for the Tribe in 2017-18, ranking second on the team with 22 podium finishes and tied for the freshman lead with nine individual victories. At the CAA Championships, he was the top scoring rookie with 48 points, and was also the only freshman to earn multiple individual medals. He finished second in the 200 back, after setting the freshman record in the prelims at 1:45.10, and took third in the 100 back at 49.15. Kealy started his week with a fourth-place finish in the 200 IM, swimming another lifetime-best of 1:49.00. Kealy was 7-1 during the regular season in the 200 back, with his only loss coming in a second-place finish against East Carolina, and also won the 500 free against VMI.
Crispino won his fifth-straight Coach of the Year award after leading the Tribe to its fourth-consecutive CAA Championship. W&M became the first men's team in conference history to sweep all five relays in a single meet, and did so while also setting the conference record in the 200 free relay, 400 medley relay, and the 400 free relay. W&M also won the 400 IM for the fifth year in a row, the 1,650 free for the third year in a row, and the 50 free for the second consecutive season. Crsipino's five Coach of the Year awards is just one shy of the conference record set by former UNCW mentor Dave Allen from 2008-13.
Also announced Thursday was the all-conference team, which includes the top three finishers in each event from the CAA Championships. W&M accounted for 21 of the 39 spots in the 13 individual swimming events, and had at least one honoree in all but one event. Next year, the Tribe will return all btu one of its individual All-CAA honors, and 16 of the 20 All-CAA relay spots.
