LYNCHBURG, Va. (March 28, 2018)—The William & Mary lacrosse team concluded its non-conference road slate with an 11-7 setback at Liberty on Wednesday evening.
Although W&M (4-6) owned a 4-3 advantage at halftime, the Flames (7-3) opened the second half with an 8-1 run.
While the Tribe held LU scoreless during the final 8:33, it was unable to overcome the six-goal deficit.
Tribe Standouts
Maddie Torgerson led the Tribe offensively with two goals and an assist, while
McKinley Wade also scored a pair of goals.
Eloise Gagnon (1g, 2a) and
Anne Milwicz (1g, 2a) added three points apiece.
Goalie
Elsa Rall posted another impressive performance and recorded 14 saves, a .560 save percentage and six ground balls. Ten of her saves came in the first half.
Cameron MacDonald also came up big defensively with six caused turnovers, four ground balls and three draw controls, while
Beth Kuyk recorded three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Inside the Numbers
Although W&M held an edge in ground balls (23-22) and committed fewer turnovers (20-22), Liberty outshot the Tribe (33-28) and owned a 13-7 advantage in draw controls.
Five of W&M's seven goals came off assists.
LU was whistled for 10 more fouls than W&M (38-28), including 12 more in the second half (24-12).
The Opposition
Kayla Foster (4g, 2a), Michaela Rich (3g, 2a) and Brian McCaffrey (3g) led the Flames offensively, while McCaffrey and Foster added six and four draw controls, respectively.
Notes
Rall is averaging 16.0 saves per game in the last two contests … McDonald's six caused turnovers were a career high and the most by a Tribe player since former All-America standout Sarah Jonson set the school record with nine CT versus Virginia Tech in 2011 … W&M is now 2-1 all-time versus Liberty and 12-4 against teams currently in the Big South … The Tribe is undefeated at home this season (4-0) but is looking for its first road victory (0-6) … The contest marked the seventh of eight contests against teams from the Commonwealth of Virginia on the Tribe's slate this season, as W&M is 3-4 in those games.
