RICHMOND, Va. (March 24, 2018)—The William & Mary lacrosse team's winning streak was snapped with a 15-1 setback at Richmond on Saturday evening.
UR (6-2) built a 6-0 advantage during the opening 30 minutes and scored the first five goals of the second half en route to securing the non-conference victory.
Goalie
Elsa Rall led W&M (4-5) and totaled a career-high 18 saves in 53:47 minutes of action.
Richmond utilized a balanced attack offensively, as five different players scored multiple goals.
Tribe Standouts
Rall's 18-save performance highlighted the Tribe's individual efforts. The Fort Washington, Pa., native also posted a .621 save percentage.
Sophie Kopec recorded W&M's goal, while
Meredith Hughes totaled two draw controls and a caused turnover.
Defensively,
Hannah Ryan posted two caused turnovers and two ground balls, while
Anne McElgunn and
Beth Kuyk both tallied three ground balls apiece.
Inside the Numbers
UR outshot W&M, 41-13, and owned advantages in ground balls (26-13) and draw controls (11-6). Additionally, the Spiders committed 10 fewer turnovers (23-13).
The Opposition
Katie Sciandra led Richmond with four goals, while Marissa Brown (3g, 2a), Kim Egizi (2g, 2a), Katie Trainer (2g, 1a) and Juli Schmuckler (2g) also tallied multiple scores. Egizi added a game-high five draw controls and four caused turnovers.
Notes
Rall's 18 saves are the most by a W&M goalie since Colleen Nofi recorded 19 stops at Duke in 2013 … W&M is now 44-10-1 all-time against Richmond … The Tribe is 71-22-1 all-time against teams currently in the Atlantic 10 … The Tribe is undefeated at home this season (4-0) but is looking for its first road victory (0-5) … The contest marked the sixth of eight contests against teams from the Commonwealth of Virginia on the Tribe's slate this season, as W&M is 3-3 in those games.
