Baseball Suffers, 7-2, Setback in Weekend Finale at Charleston

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The William & Mary baseball team was unable slow down CAA rival College of Charleston after dropping a 7-2 decision in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader. The Cougars (19-6, 3-0 CAA) tallied 10-plus hits (13) for the second time in a row to knock off the Tribe (8-16, 0-3 CAA).

The Cougars opened the weekend finale with a four-run advantage and sustained control of game through the entirety of the evening. W&M put a run on the scoreboard in the fifth and sixth inning, but CofC always had an answer in the bottom half of each frame.

In the top of the fifth senior Craig McLane hit a leadoff single to the pitcher, before making it to third on a grounder and wild pitch. Junior Zach Pearson then brought McLane home courtesy of a sacrifice fly to right field.

Junior Colin Lipke was responsible for W&M's second run of the contest in the sixth. The Greensboro, N.C., native led off the frame with a double to left field. He moved 90 feet from home plate behind a grounder and scored on a passed ball.

Tribe Standouts
Freshman Matt McDermott, sophomore Matthew Trehub, Lipke, Pearson all had a hit each. Junior Owen Socher and senior Ryan Hall were able to reach base on walks. Senior Michael Toner led the pitching staff with five strikeouts, while sophomore Wade Strain added three more.
