WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Dec. 12, 2018) – William & Mary men's gymnastics standouts
Jacopo Gliozzi and
Peter Makey were recently selected as initiates to the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Society.
Gliozzi also earned the Ann Callahan Chappell Award, which is given to the most outstanding PBK initiate.
Joining Gliozzi and Makey as Fall 2018 Initiates is fellow W&M student-athlete, Claire Williams, who is a member of the Tribe's swimming team.
With the Tribe's three selections, a total of 75 W&M student-athletes have garnered the honor since 1990, while the department's all-time count now stands at 271 (since 1899).
One of the country's top gymnasts, Gliozzi emerged on the national stage as a sophomore when he earned NCAA All-America honors on pommel horse after a sixth-place finish. This fall, he competed internationally as a member of the Italian team at the prestigious Turnier der Meister World Cup.
W&M's record holder on pommel horse, the Fairfax, Va., native is also a two-time USA Gymnastics Collegiate All-American in the event (2016, 2018) and has won the ECAC title during each of the last two seasons.
Elected as one of the Tribe's team captains this season, Gliozzi is a two-time Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-America honoree, which includes being a first-team selection last season. He is majoring in physics and currently owns a 4.0 GPA.
Honored as a College Gymnastics Association Academic First-Team All-American Scholar-Athlete three times (2016-18), Gliozzi is a W&M Monroe Scholar and a three-time Provost Award winner.
Makey enters his senior season after a tremendous junior campaign in which he won the USA Gymnastics Collegiate national title on rings.
A three-time USAG Collegiate All-American in the event, he also won the Eastern College Athletic Conference in 2017 and ranks tied for 10th in W&M's record book.
An outstanding student, Makey is a three-time College Gymnastics Association first-team Academic All-American Scholar-Athlete and is pursuing a double major in English and Government.
Additionally, Makey currently serves as the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) President after being a Service Chair last year.
