W&M Men's Soccer Out-Shoots Delaware in the CAA Quarters, Wins 3-2

Story Links

The William & Mary men's soccer team overcame an early deficit on the road Saturday night in the Colonial Athletic Association Quarterfinals, scoring three unanswered to upset Delaware, 3-2.  The Tribe improves to 6-9-2 on the season and advances to the CAA Semifinals, while the Blue Hens' season ends at 5-11-1.

How it Happened
- Neither team was able to put the finishing touches on several drive early, before Delaware was able to win a corner in the 13th minute.  The serve went all the way over to the back post where Robert Campbell fired a strike from five yards out, but W&M goalkeeper Sam Onyeador set the tone for the night, swallowing up the shot and sending the Tribe back down the field.
- The Blue Hens broke through early in the 17th minute, with Nathan Edmunds getting the ball from a service from the wing, then spinning and shooting into the far lower corner.
- W&M wasted no time on the response, tying the game 1-1 in the early part of the 19th minute.  Graham Guidry and Julian Ngoh worked the ball patiently but decisively up the field, pinballing passes off the defenders and each other until Guidry was able to take it wide to the side of the box and served back in to Ngoh, who faked the Delaware keeper into a dive and then shot just under the crossbar for the tying goal.
- Delaware had a chance to regain the lead at the end of the 29th minute with another penalty corner, but Onyeador made two incredible saves, first on a bullet from the top of the box, and then on the follow-up from just a yard away.
- On the breakout from the corner, W&M quickly moved into the attack and swung the momentum in favor of the Tribe.  Ryder Bell got the ball deep in the corner of the attacking half, and sent a long pass in towards the box.  Reeves Trott was being marked hard, but he was able to spin out of the tackle and get his shot off past the keeper for the 2-1 lead.
- Delaware had two more corners in the final 10 minutes and a header shot that Onyeador saved for his fourth stop of the night, but neither team was able to score again before heading in for halftime.
- Coming out of the locker room, W&M kept up the pressure, and broke through again in the 55th minute.  Ngoh was able to jump on a pass Delaware made back towards its goalkeeper, and he set up Trott for the easy chip shot goal and the 3-1 lead.
- Delaware wasn't ready to concede the game, and scored at the start of the 57th minute.  Arno Masson-Viale got the ball low on the baseline and served it mid-range, where Jake Steinberg headed it further on to Ryan Mertz charging towards goal on the far side of the defense.  Mertz was able to convert, and the Tribe lead was down to 3-2 with 33 minutes still to play.
- The W&M defense locked down for the final 30 minutes of game action, and though Delaware was able to take four more shots and another corner, their fifth of the game, the Blue Hens were unable to put any of them on-frame.  Guidry had a couple chances for the Tribe, but was likewise unable to convert, and at the final horn, W&M was able to survive and advance, 3-2.
