Women's Soccer Earns Road Point with 1-1 Draw at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The William & Mary women's soccer team picked up an important road point on Sunday afternoon thanks to a 1-1 draw at defending Colonial Athletic Association Champion Hofstra. Junior Sarah Segan scored her third goal in the last four matches for the Tribe (5-7-1, 2-2-1 CAA), and classmate Katelyn Briguglio was stout in goal with 16 saves, the most in the CAA and 10th highest total in the country this season, to stymy the Pride (9-5-1, 3-2-1 CAA) attack.

While Hofstra outshot W&M 12-4 in the opening 45 minutes, the teams had equally dangerous chances. The Pride's best chance came on a Sabrina Bryan breakaway in the 16th minute, but her opportunity from 12 yards out hit the left post. The Tribe nearly scored on the counter attack thanks to a beautiful through ball to Segan, but her chip, which beat the Hofstra defense and seemed destined for the back of the net, bounced painstakingly just over the crossbar in the 27th minute.

Segan took advantage of a second chip chance in the 48th minute to give the Tribe a 1-0 lead. Senior Arundel Miguelez won the ball in the midfield and found Norton out wide near the midfield stripe. The sophomore midfielder immediately volleyed a pass to a streaking Segan down the middle of the pitch. The junior striker sent a shot over the top of the rushing Hofstra goalkeeper Jenna Borresen and into the back of the net from 30 yards out.

Despite 10 second-half saves from Briguglio, the Pride found the equalizer with just three minutes remaining in regulation. Miri Taylor and Bryan played give-and-go inside the top of the box, and Taylor converted into the right side of the frame from 12 yards out just past the outstretched arm of Briguglio.

The Tribe had four shots in the overtime periods, including three in the first 10 minutes, along with its only corner kick of the game in the second extra session, but could not find the winner. The best chance came off the foot of Segan in the 93rd minute as she cut to the middle of the 18-yard box, but her shot from 10 yards out went just high of the crossbar.

Quotable
"It was a great physical battle, and I am very proud to get a point on the road. We withstood a lot of pressure but came into our own and changed the momentum. (Sarah) Segan scored a great goal off a perfectly played pass by Colleen (Norton). It was unfortunate to allow a late goal, but it doesn't take anything away from a valiant effort by everyone." – Head women's soccer coach Julie Shackford
