WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Senior midfielder
Mackenzie Kober scored her first goal of the season in the 85th minute to lead the William & Mary women's soccer team to a key Colonial Athletic Association 2-1 win over visiting Elon on Friday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. Junior
Sarah Segan set up both W&M (6-7-1, 3-2-1 CAA) goals, including the game-winner late in the contest after the Phoenix (3-7-3, 1-4 CAA) equalized with just over 12 minutes remaining.
After an uneventful opening 45 minutes, the Tribe broke through as freshman
Grace Santos opened her collegiate account in the 52nd minute. Segan weaved through the Elon defense to the endline, before centering a pass near the PK spot, and Santos settled before ripping a shot into the right side of the frame.
W&M had a couple chances to double its lead on shots from sophomore
Courtney Miles in the 63rd minute and Segan in the 71st, but Elon goalkeeper Valentina Estrada came up with stops. The Phoenix found the equalizer in the 78th minute. Lauren McKeever collected a Tribe turnover along the left flank and sent a diagonal ball into the middle of the area. Tori Baliatico ran onto it and one-touched a finish just inside the left post from eight yards out.
Junior
Charlotte Hyland nearly answered just two and a half minutes later, before Kober found the winner. Segan and Kober played give and go in the middle of the pitch. Segan sent a beautiful through ball to set Kober free inside the top of the 18. With Estrada coming off her line, the Tribe senior sent a bending shot inside the right post for the winner.
