W&M Defeats James Madison, 5-4 in Overtime Sunday

The William & Mary field hockey team wrapped up the regular season on Sunday afternoon, traveling up to James Madison and beating the Dukes 5-4 in overtime.  The Tribe improved to 9-7 overall and 5-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while the Dukes fell to 6-11 (2-4 CAA).

How it Happened
- James Madison out-shot W&M in the first half, 10-4, but it was the Tribe who got on the scoreboard first.
- In the 16th minute, junior Woodard Hooper (Reston, Va.) was battling in front of the cage, and knocked her shot in for the 1-0 lead and her team-leading ninth goal of the year.
- The Dukes responded in the 23rd minute out of a penalty corner.  Freshman goalkeeper Kimi Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) stuffed the first two shots on the set play, but Emilly Schutt was able to sneak her shot through on the third attempt to tie the match 1-1.
- In the 33rd minute, a JMU foul in the scoring area gave W&M a penalty stroke attempt, and junior Cassidy Goodwin (Gloucester, Va.) stepped up to the dot and converted the attempt to regain the lead, 2-1.
- Right before the half, the Dukes evened the score again, 2-2, as Elfi de Rooij broke away from the defenders and put her shot in.
- W&M peppered JMU goalkeeper Caitlin Nelson early in the second half, taking three shots and two penalty corners, but the Dukes were able to get on the board first and take their first lead of the game.  In the 45th minute, Ongeziwe Mali and Corey Mayer set up a give-and-go through the defense that ended with Mali's shot finding the back of the net.
- The Tribe responded right away, with redshirt-senior Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW, Australia) fighting through the defense to score her ninth of the year, moving back into a tie with Hooper for the team lead.
- James Madison again took a brief lead with 15 minutes to go exactly, with Mayer driving through the defense and shooting one-on-one for the 4-3 lead.
- However, the Green and Gold was there again to tie the match back up at 4-4.  After a timeout for Coach Tess Ellis and her staff to provide some crunch-time adjustments, freshman Cara Menges (Richmond, Va.) found Hooper at the left post for a one-time shot into goal.
- That's how regulation ended, despite penalty corners for both teams.
- In the extra time, W&M's greater experience in 7v7 this season paid dividends.  The Tribe was playing in its NCAA-leading and school-record seventh overtime game, while the Dukes were in their first of the year.
- The Tribe's first chance came in the 72nd minute off a penalty corner, but Christie van de Kamp's (Midlothian, Va.) shot was saved by Nelson and Goodwin's follow-up slid wide of the cage.
- W&M drew another corner, its eighth of the game, in the 75th minute to bring the game to a close.  It was Hughes again who juked the defense and scored, her overtime game-winner of the season.

Notes
Both Hooper and Hughes each have a career-high 10 goals this season ... It's the second year in a row and 12th time overall that W&M has had multiple players reach double-digit goals in the same season ... W&M tied its school records for overtime games in a season and overtime wins in a season ... It was the seventh overtime game of the year, matching the 1983 team ... The four overtime wins matches that of the 1990 squad ... W&M continues to lead the NCAA in both overtime games (7) and overtime periods (11) this season ... Jones made five saves in the game, and finishes the regular season with a CAA-best .706 save percentage ... Menges' assist was her fifth of the season ... Today's game was just the second in series history in which both JMU and W&M reached four goals, joining the Oct. 19, 1977 match in Williamsburg that ended in a 4-4 tie.
