The William & Mary field hockey team played a smart, tough game on both ends of the field on Friday afternoon, downing Northeastern 2-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals. The Tribe improved to 10-7 on the year, while the Huskies finished their season at 8-11.
How it Happened
- The vast majority of the game was played in the midfield, as both teams showed off strong defenses.
- W&M had the majority of chances in the first half, taking seven penalty corners and eight shots to just two of each for Northeastern, eventually converting on the final corner in the 33rd minute.
- On the corner, junior
Cassidy Goodwin (Gloucester, Va.) sent the ball into captain
Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.), who set up redshirt-senior
Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW, Australia) for the shot and the score. It was Hughes' team-leading 11th goal of the season, the seventh assist for van de Kamp, and the second for Goodwin.
- Northeastern picked up the pressure in the second half, taking six shots to W&M's eight, but CAA Rookie of the Year
Kimi Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) stood tall in the goal, making four saves to preserve the clean sheet.
- On the other end of the field, W&M kept probing around the edges of the defense, and eventually broke through with two penalty corners in the final 90 seconds.
- Northeastern goalkeeper Julia Gluyas made the last of her 10 saves to stifle the first corner, but the second penalty was unstoppable.
- With just over 30 seconds to go, junior
Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.), after starting the corner stepped in and got the ball back, then flipped it up and over the defense to the back post where classmate
Woodard Hooper (Reston, Va.) swatted it out of the air and into the next. The goal kept Hooper tied with Hughes for the lead with 11 goals, while for Snead, it was even more important as it gave her 11 assists on the year, tying the program's all-time record that has stood since 1979.
