On a night that was more suited for early February than late October, the William & Mary field hockey team and No. 20 Virginia raced neck-and-neck into the second overtime period before the Cavaliers were able to put a lucky shot in and win, 3-2. The Tribe moves to 8-7 on the year, while the Cavaliers improved 8-8 overall.
How it Happened
- Virginia controlled play for most of the first half, and went into the break ahead 1-0.
- At the end of the 20th minute, the Cavaliers' Erin Shanahan dribbled into the circle and rifled a shot to the far upper 90, glancing in off the post.
- Even though Virginia had an 11-3 advantage in corners, freshman goalkeeper
Kimi Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) and the W&M defense played extremely well to keep the Tribe close. Jones made five saves in the first half, and junior
Cassidy Goodwin (Gloucester, Va.) added a defensive save, her second in as many games.
- The second half was much more even, with the Tribe coming back from a pair of one-goal deficits to force overtime.
- W&M wasted no time evening the match early, scoring at the end of 37th minute out of a penalty corner. After the insertion and several passes back and forth, junior
Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.) found her classmate
Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.), who fired her shot to the back post and in.
- Virginia moved back into the lead in the 42nd minute, as Makayla Gallen drove in along the baseline and then flipped a pass up and over the defense to find Greta Ell for the tap-in at the back post.
- W&M drew another penalty corner in the 50th minute, one of five in the half for the Green and Gold, and once again scored to tie the match 2-2. Van de Kamp fired a shot towards the back post again, and Goodwin was there to get her stick on it and wrap it around the goalkeeper for the score.
- Despite best efforts from both teams, including a Virginia penalty corner with no time on the clock that Jones was able to lay out and sweep away, that's how regulation ended.
- In the first overtime period, both teams had to deal with five-minute yellow cards at off-set times (Virginia early, W&M late), but neither was able to capitalize on the player advantage. The Cavaliers had the best chance, taking four shots in quick succession in the 79th minute from a distance of three feet. Jones stonewalled the first three attempts, and sophomore
Ella Donahue (Midlothian, Va.) cleared the final attempt off the line for a defensive save.
- Virginia was able to win it in the first minute of the second overtime period on a lucky bounce. Shanahan's shot hit squarely on the post and came back out to Ell, who was able to one-time it under Jones as both players collided over the ball.
