W&M Field Hockey Heads to West Coast to Face Pacific, No. 21 Stanford

The William & Mary field hockey team goes further than it's ever gone before this weekend, heading to California for a pair of games over Fall Break.  The Tribe will take on Pacific on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. Pacific (5 p.m. Eastern), before facing No. 21 Stanford on Monday at 3 p.m. Pacific (6 p.m. Eastern).  Live video and live stats for both matches are available through TribeAthletics.com.

Scouting the Tribe
W&M enters the weekend at 6-4, and winners of three straight to lead the Colonial Athletic Association at 3-0 in league play.  Junior Woodard Hooper (Reston, Va.) is the reigning CAA Player of the Week, after scoring a hat trick in the Tribe's most recent game, a 6-0 win over Towson last weekend.  Hooper now has six goals on the year, with a league-leading four of them coming in conference play.  Redshirt-senior Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW, Australia) leads the CAA in scoring when all games are considered, with 19 points (1.9 per game) and eight goals (0.80 per game).  Juniors Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.) and Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.), meanwhile, rank 1-2 in the CAA in assists per game, with 0.60 and 0.40, respectively.  On defense, freshman goalkeeper Kimi Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) is a perfect 4-0 with a 1.32 GAA and 20 saves on a .769 save percentage, numbers which improve to a league-leading 0.78 GAA and .833 save percentage in conference play.

Scouting the Tigers
Pacific is 8-5 overall and 2-0 in the America East, after winning back-to-back 2-1 games over Cal and UC Davis (in a penalty shootout).  On offense, Kriekie van Wyk ranks among the national leaders with 11 goals and 24 points on the season, while Rylee Comeau has five goals, and Gaby de Kock has six assists.  On defense, three players each have a pair of defensive saves, and sophomore goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder has played every minute in goal with a 1.39 GAA and 70 saves on a .787 percentage.

Scouting the Cardinal
Stanford is ranked No. 21 in the latest NFHCA national poll, and 9-4 (2-0 America East) after beating Cal 3-2 on Friday night.  Corinne Zanolli ranks second in the nation with 18 goals, and also has a team-best six assists for 42 points overall on the season, while Emma Christus has six goals and five assists, and Phoebe Crosthwaite has four goals and five assists.  On defense, Kelsey Bing has a 1.37 GAA and 67 saves on a .788 save percentage.

The Series
- W&M is 2-1 all-time against Pacific, but the Tigers won last year's match-up 5-4 in Williamsburg.
- The series with Stanford is all-square at 3-3, but the teams are meeting for the first time since a 2-1 W&M win in 2003.  The Tribe also won the first two meetings, 5-1 in the first rounds of both the 1975 and 1976 AIAW National Championships.

News and Notes
- This weekend marks the first time that the Tribe has ever played west of the Mississippi River.  The Tribe is 8-6 all-time against teams from California, but all of those games were held either in Williamsburg or at other neutral sites.

- With both Hooper and Hughes scoring hat tricks this season, this is the first year since 2003 that W&M has had multiple hat tricks in the same year.

- Hooper's hat trick against Towson was the first of her career, and tied her for 15th all-time in a single game at W&M.

- Hughes' hat trick against Brown was her first, and her fifth overall multi-goal game.  That's tied for the sixth-most in school history, and just one game behind what former teammates Emma MacLeod '18 and Cammie Lloyd '18 achieved.

- Freshman Cara Menges (Richmond, Va.) was named the CAA Rookie of the Week on Oct. 2, after scoring two goals including the overtime game-winner against Northeastern.

- W&M has been strong on the corner at both ends of the field this season, leading the CAA in both offensive conversion of penalty corners, and defending opponent's penalty corners.  The Tribe has scored nine goals on 48 corners (18.75%), and only allowed eight goals on 57 attempts (an 85.96% penalty kill rate).

- Head coach Tess Ellis became the third W&M coach to reach 50 wins last weekend with the victory over Towson, joining Nancy Porter (1974-1981) and Peel Hawthorne '80 (1987-2013)

- W&M's 3-0 start in CAA play is just the fourth ever for the Tribe, joining the 2004, 2005, and 2017 seasons.

- In the latest NFHCA National Poll, W&M had seven opponents ranked.  That includes No. 4 Duke, No. 5 Connecticut, No. 16 Wake Forest, No. 18 Delaware, No. 20 Virginia, No. 21 Stanford, and No. 25 Old Dominion.

- The first seven of the Tribe's games this season were all won with at least four goals, the longest-such streak in school history.  Before the  6-1 win for No. 2 UCONN, the first six games had all been won with four goals each, which is the longest-ever streak of the same winning totals.

- With games against UCONN and Delaware, this is the first time since 1999 that the Tribe has played each of the previous two NCAA Champions in the same season.

- With the cancellation of the Davidson match, W&M is projected to finish the regular season with the fewest number of games played (16) since the 1989 season, which had 15 games before the South Atlantic Conference tournament.  W&M went 10-5 in those 15 games, and finished 12-6 after reaching the conference championship game.

- Over the summer, Christie van de Kamp was named to the Team USA U21 Junior National Team for the second year in a row.

- Both van de Kamp and senior Jenny McCann (Annandale, Va.) will serve as team captains this season.
