WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's soccer team suffered a hard-luck 2-1 loss to in-state rival James Madison on Sunday at Martin Family Stadium at Albert Daly Field. With the decision, the Tribe falls to 6-8-1, 3-3-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Dukes improve to 9-7, 6-1 in league action.
The Dukes struck first in the ninth minute. Ginger Deel cut past a Tribe defender and Briguglio blocked her shot. The rebound deflected off Briguglio and off the post, before rolling along the goal line. The Tribe goalkeeper sprawled and look to keep the ball out of the goal, but it was ruled that it squeaked over the line for the match's lid-lifting goal.
W&M leveled the score just nine minutes later. Sophomore
Page Frantz played a ball into the box that bounced around dangerously, before redshirt junior
Sarah Segan was able to get her head to and direct it into the top of the net.
The Tribe was dealt a major blow in the 63rd when Segan was given a straight red card for a challenge on the JMU goalkeeper. The Dukes took advantage of the upper hand, scoring off a corner kick in the 76th minute. Sophie Brause volleyed home a deflected corner from eight yards out to put the visitors on top for good at 2-1.
Despite playing a player down, the Tribe continued to press for the equalizer and had a number of quality chances, but could not find the finisher. Off a free kick from Frantz in the 84th minute, senior
Mackenzie Kober popped a header just wide of the left post from 12-yards out. In the 86th minute, senior
Arundel Miguelez unleashed a knuckler from distance that McShea blocked down and was able to smother it before the Tribe attack could pounce on the rebound.
