WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer team battled toe-to-toe with CAA-leading James Madison but were done in by a second-half penalty kick on Wednesday night at Martin Family Stadium. The Green and Gold (2-7-2, 0-2-2 CAA) outshot JMU, 11-10, and had a number of quality opportunities in the final 45 minutes. Manuel Ferrio's 68th-minute PK propel was the difference for the Dukes (7-3-2, 5-1 CAA).
Both teams had chances in the final 10 minutes of the opening half. The first came in the 36th minute as senior
Antonio Bustamante served a beautiful ball over the top of the JMU defense to a rushing junior
Reeves Trott. Unfortunately, Trott's shot from 12 yards out hit of the left post.
In the closing minute of the first half, JMU had its best opportunity with a sequence of the three shots. The first chance off the head of Carson Jeffris was blocked wide by
Sam Onyeador, but the follow-up attempt from Niclas Mohr needed to be cleared off the line by defender
Remi Frost. Jeffris bounced on the final rebound chance by sent his chance wide of the goal.
Senior
Ryder Bell and Bustamante both had early opportunities in the second half. In the 56th minute, Bell ran onto a nice leading pass into the top right side of the box, but his shot went high of the frame. Ten minutes later, Bustamante cut right into the center of the penalty area, but his shot from 12 yards out was blocked by JMU goalkeeper TJ Bush.
In the 68th minute, the Tribe was whistled for a hand ball in the penalty area. Ferriol scored for the Dukes, sending his PK into the right side of the frame.
W&M came incredibly close to the equalizer in the closing minutes. Off a long throw-in, freshman
James Bradley jumped on a loose ball. The JMU backline blocked his initial attempt, and his rebound chance caught a deflection before being gathered along the goalline by Bush.
With 21 seconds remaining, the Green and Gold had one final chance. Bell was fouled along the top of the 18-yard box. Bustamatne took the free kick, but Bush made the save to preserve the Dukes win.
