Women's Basketball Comeback Bid Falls Short in CAA Home Opener Versus Towson

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Senior Abby Rendle nearly registered a triple-double with 16 points, eight rebounds, and nine blocks, but the William & Mary women's basketball team couldn't overcome Towson as it dropped its Colonial Athletic Association home opener, 67-66, at Kaplan Arena Sunday. With the setback, the Tribe falls to 11-3, 2-1 in league play, while Towson improves to 6-9, 1-3 in CAA action.

With the game tied at 8-8, W&M used a quick 4-0 spurt to take its largest lead of the game at 12-8 with 4:12 left in the first quarter. Freshman Gabby Rogers scored four quick points to account for the run.

Towson used a 6-0 run to build its largest lead of the first half midway through the second quarter. Jalynn Holmes reclaimed the lead for Towson with a jumper, before Raine Bankston hit a lay-up, and Mary Cuevas connected on two from the line to make it 25-20 with 5:00 left in the half.

Trailing by seven with 7:09 remaining, the Tribe used an 8-0 to regain the lead. Sophomore Victoria Reynolds opened the run with four straight points, before a senior Jenna Green lay-up brought the Tribe within one. On the next offensive possession junior Bianca Boggs put W&M up 57-56 with 4:27 left on a lay-up.

The Tigers restored a five-point lead thanks Cuevas connecting on 4-of-4 from the line down the stretch, but the Tribe came storming back. Senior Abby Rendle scored a lay-up to cut it to three, and then the Tribe forced a backcourt violation. Sophomore Nari Garner had a pair of looks at a game tying three, but one was rejected and the other was just short. Reynolds converted a lay-up on the put back as time expired, which made the final score 67-66.

Inside the Numbers
-  W&M shot just 40.3-percent (25-for-62) from the floor in the contest. The Tribe also was just 12-of-18 (66.7-percent) from the stripe.

- Towson out rebounded W&M, 44-35. It was just the second time this season W&M lost when being out rebounded.

- W&M handed out 20 assists compared to just 10 for Towson. The Tribe was paced by senior Jenna Green with nine dimes.

- The Green and Gold have put three players in double-figures in every game this season. Today senior Abby Rendle (16 points), junior Bianca Boggs (16 points) and sophomore Victoria Reynolds (14 points) were all in double-digits.

Notes
Senior Abby Rendle was in double-figures for the 12th time this season and the 48th time of her career … Rendle tied for the fourth most blocks in school history with nine rejections … The senior now has 945 career points and needs just 55 more points to become the 19th player in school history to register her 1,000th career point … Junior Bianca Boggs was in double-figures for the 12th time this season and 29th time of her career … Sophomore Victoria Reynolds added her eighth double-digit game of the season and 12th of her career with 14 points … Senior Jenna Green added nine assists to now have 450 career helpers … She needs eight more helpers to move into second place all-time and 54 to become the all-time leader in school history … W&M's 11 team blocks are good for the ninth best single-game performance.
