Tribe Men Down FAU, NJIT, for Most Wins in 20 Years

The William & Mary men's swimming team easily cruised to a pair of victories Thursday at Florida Atlantic, downing the host Owls 165-66 as well as NJIT, 173-58.  The meet was held outdoors in unseasonably cool temperatures, and in the midst of the Tribe's heaviest volume of in-season training on the winter training trip.

W&M won every swimming race in the 13-event format against both schools to improve to 8-1 on the year, the most wins in a season since the 1998-99 team went 15-1.  Seven men won individual events, led by the duo of Carter Kale (Williamsburg, Va.) and Colin Wright (Williamsburg, Va.) who both won a pair of events for a 4-0 record against the two opponents.  Kale swept the 1,000 free in 9:34.55, winning by almost 11 seconds, and later took the 500 free in 4:38.50, five seconds ahead of the field.  Wright, for his part, once again swept the 50 and the 100 free, touching the wall in a modest 21.23 seconds and 46.98 seconds.

Other winners included freshman Brien Collier (Ambler, Pa.), who swam 1:45.20 to win the 200 free and lead a sweep of the top four places.  W&M also made a clean sweep of the 200 IM behind Chris Balbo's (Short Hills, N.J.) winning time of 1:56.14, as well as in the 100 fly where sophomore Jack Doherty (Middletown, Conn.) stopped the clock in 51.80 seconds for the victory.  The final two swimming events were the 100 back, won by Colin Demers (Virginia Beach, Va.) in 52.96 seconds, and the 100 breast, where junior Brooks Peterson (Carrollton, Va.) was first to the wall in 1:00.01.  The Tribe also took the win against both opponents in both relays, with the 200 medley being won in 1:34.27 by the team of Wyatt Grubb (Mechanicsville, Va.), Devin McNulty (Herndon, Va.), Doherty, and Ian Thompson (Alexandria, Va.).  The last event of the day, the 400 free relay, was won by the team of Kyle Neri (Wallingford, Conn.), Wright, Eric Grimes (Louisville, Ky.), and Thompson, combining to swim 3:11.34 and win by seven seconds.

Notes
W&M improved to 8-1 overall, its best win total since the 1998-99 team went 15-1 ... It is just the ninth time that the Tribe has ever reached eight wins in a season ... Today was believed to be W&M's first outdoor meet in memory ... It was 45 degrees on the pool deck at the start of the meet ... It was also the Tribe's first-ever meetings with both FAU and NJIT ... With two dual meets left even before the championship season, Wright already has 15 individual wins to lead the Tribe.

Up Next
William & Mary finishes out its training trip this week, and will return to action next Saturday, Jan. 13, with a 1 p.m. road meet at Old Dominion.
