HARRISONBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's soccer team scored three-straight goals to erased a 2-0 first-half deficit, but James Madison responded with the final two in pulling out a high-scoring 4-3 contest at Sentara Park on Wednesday evening. Senior
William Eskay, junior
Antonio Bustamante and sophomore
Reeves Trott each found the back of the net for the Tribe, while junior
Ryder Bell tallied a pair of assists.
James Madison jumped out to a two-goal lead with markers in the 16th and 23rd minutes. Yannick Franz gave the Dukes (4-3-2, 1-0-1 CAA) a 1-0 cushion, bending in a corner kick just off the gloves of senior goalkeeper
Phil Breno. Joe Vyner doubled the JMU advantage seven minutes later as he collected a pass along the left side of the 18-yard box, turned and scored with a low liner inside the far post.
W&M (4-4-2, 0-2-1 CAA) pulled one back on a Bustamante penalty kick just five minutes before halftime. Off a Tribe corner kick, JMU's Tim Estermann tripped up Trott from behind, resulting in a penalty kick.
The Tribe scored twice over a six-minute span in the early stages of the second half to move in front. In the 52nd minute, Bell and sophomore Hristo Bustmante combined down the left flank. Bustamante's cross was perfectly placed toward the middle of the area just outside the six, and Eskay headed it into the right side to pull the Tribe even at two.
Six minutes later, Trott made it three unanswered goals, sliding one home from six yards out. Bell set up the play as he and Trott played give-and-go off a throw-in. His low cross from the right wing found the foot of Trott, sliding across the turf to give the visitors a 3-2 lead.
The Dukes answered with a pair of goals six minutes apart. Manuel Ferriol drew the Dukes even with a volley off his own blocked shot from 18 yards out in the 64th minute. Maarten Nikkessen put the home team on top for good in the 70th minute. Tim Estermann headed down a Billy Metzler cross to Nikkessen, who scored from six yards out.
