UNCW Second-Half Goals Halt Men's Soccer Upset Bid

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Freshman back Sam Golan scored his first collegiate goal, but the No. 18-ranked UNCW rallied behind two second-half goals to down William & Mary men's soccer, 2-1, in a CAA clash on Saturday night at Martin Family Stadium. Forward Phillip Goodrum scored both goals for the Seahawks (6-1, 2-0 CAA) off scrums in front of the net following corner kicks.

The Tribe (4-3-2, 0-1-1 CAA) jumped on top with Golan's marker in the 28th minute. After UNCW cleared a Tribe corner kick out of the penalty area, sophomore Tanner Shane pushed a loose ball to junior Remi Frost along the top of the 18-yard box. Frost touched around a Seahawk defender, before sending the ball forward into the path of Golan, and the rookie punched it into the rights side of the goal from six yards out.

The UNCW pressure mounted in the second half, including twice hitting the crossbar, before they broke through off a corner kick in the 75th minute. On the play, Dylan Chain's initial header was cleared off the line by junior Antonio Bustamante, but Goodrum got enough of the rebound to spin it into the goal despite a deflection in front.

Ten minutes later the Seahawks converted off another corner kick as Goodrum found the back of the net again. Ben Davidson sent the cross toward the back post, and Brayden Smith headed in down into the middle of the six-yard box. With his back to goal, Goodrum collected the loose ball and flipped it home with the back heel to give the Seahawks a 2-1 advantage.

Less than a minute later, Bustamante nearly equalized for the Green and Gold. UNCW goalkeeper Ryan Cretens came up with a big save, diving to his left to push away Bustamante's chance from 30 yards out. Earlier in the 54th minute, Bustamante just missed giving W&M a 2-0 lead as his 20-yard free kick hit the outside of the post.
