CARY, N.C. – Despite goals from senior
William Eskay and junior
Antonio Bustamante, the William & Mary men's soccer team dropped an offensive battle with No. 8-ranked North Carolina on Wednesday evening at the WakeMed Soccer Park. The Tribe (2-2-2) twice rallied from a goal deficit in each half, but Alan Winn scored twice for the Tar Heels (5-1) including the game-winning in the 73rd minute.
UNC got on the board first just over three minutes into the contest. On the counter attack, Alan Winn outraced the Tribe defense, touched around goalkeeper
Phil Breno and finished to give the Tar Heels a 1-0 advantage.
The Tribe pressure for the equalizer came to fruition in the 32nd minute. Sophomore
Reeves Trott sent in a cross from the right wing, and Eskay beat a defender and UNC goalkeeper Alec Smir to the ball, touching inside the near post from six-yards out.
The Tar Heels moved back in front with a set piece. Off a Cam Lindley corner kick, UNC's leading scorer Jelani Pieters flicked a header to the middle of the six and reserve Giovanni Montesdeoca punched it home for a 2-1 halftime cushion.
Bustamante scored his first goal of the season in the 69th minute to pull the Tribe even once again. Off a long throw-in from junior
Ryder Bell, Eskay played the ball back to Bustamante who ripped a shot from 25 yards out past the diving Smir.
The Tar Heels answered for the final time just four minutes later. Off Lindley free kick, Pineda knocked the ball into the path of Winn, who rifled it in at the near post for his second goal of the night and the game-winner.
