The William & Mary field hockey team came out firing early, and kept firing late, to push past Fairfield 3-1 on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Tribe evened its record at 1-1 on the year, while the Stags fell to 0-2 overall.
Unlike Friday's game, which needed nearly the entire first half for a score to go in, Sunday saw W&M jump on the scoreboard early. Right near the end of the first minute, sophomore
Woodard Hooper (Reston, Va.) drove into the circle and passed up to senior
Cammie Lloyd (Midlothian, Va.) who put the keeper on her hip and spun the opposite way to blast a shot into the boards. The score stayed 1-0 for the rest of the half, despite nine more shots by the Tribe and four penalty corners for Fairfield.
In the second half, the Stags struck first, squaring the score at 1-1 out of a scrum in front of goal in the 44th minute. Just a few minutes later, however, Hooper regained the lead on a nifty deflection off of a shot by
Booter Ellis (Delmar, Del.) on a corner. Then with 13 minutes to go, another corner and another shot by Ellis found the stick of
Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.) this time, who redirected the ball into goal to set the final margin at 3-1 in favor of the Green and Gold.
Inside the Numbers
- W&M outshot Fairfield 22-15, including 10-6 in the first half and 12-9 in the second.
- The disparity was even greater in shots on goal, 15-6 for the Tribe (5-2 in the first half, 10-4 in the second).
- Sophomore
Morgan Connor (Bedford, N.Y.) made five saves, while her counterpart in red made 11 stops.
- Penalty corners were an even 5-5, with Fairfield leading 4-3 in the first half and W&M ahead 2-1 in the second. Both of the Tribe's second-half corners led to goals.
Notes
First career start for Hooper ... Hooper scored her first career assist, and first career game-winning goal ... Lloyd moves up to a tie for 13th in school history with 24 career goals ... Connor has taken over 16th all-time with 107 career saves ... Her 5.1 saves per game would be good for seventh if she'd played more than 35 games to qualify ... Ellis tied her career high with two assists ... Total is also tied for 10th-most in a single game all-time ... Ellis now has 10 assists total in her career.
