WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Sophomore
Charlotte Hyland netted her first career hat trick in the second half to lift the William & Mary women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Bucknell on Sunday afternoon at Albert-Daly Field. The Tribe improves to 4-0-0 for the first time since 2011 with the win, while the Bison fall to 0-4-0.
The first 45 minutes of the match was a stalemate as each team battled for possession, but neither could separate. Each side fired three first half shots, and both had just one-shot on-goal.
Hyland's special day started in the 57th minute when she scored the icebreaker. The Tribe, which was in control since the half's opening whistle, had created some trouble in the box, but it looked like the Bison had it under control. However, Hyland stole the ball from a defender, cleared space for her shot, and fired it into the right corner of the net.
W&M continued to control the possession, but in the 79th minute off a counter attack the Bison found the equalizer. Jenna Marek made a nice individual play on the right side of the field to send a cross into the box. Bailey Hurst was open in front and got on the other end of the pass and scored the tying goal.
The magic however continued for Hyland has she netted two goals in the final six minutes of the match. She put away the eventual game-winner when senior
Sami Grasso charged into the left side of the penalty area and laid a pass off to her in the 84th minute. After being denied the hat trick moments before, Grasso found classmate
Rachel Moore, who sent the ball to Hyland all alone in front of the keeper. Like the two previous chances, she scored and iced the Tribe's 3-1 win.
