Baseball Edged by Northeastern, 3-1, on Senior Day

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. –  After playing through rainy conditions, the Williams & Mary baseball team was edged by CAA foe Northeastern, 3-1, on Friday afternoon at Plumeri Park.
 
Originally scheduled as a doubleheader, game two was canceled due to the constant downpour in the local area.
 
With the setback, the Tribe slides to 28-23 overall and 12-8 in CAA play, while the Huskies improve to 24-23, 13-7 in conference action.
 
Prior to start of the contest, W&M recognized its nine-member senior class that that consists of Charles Ameer, Chase Bailey, Nick Brown, Aaron Fernandez, Tim Hoehn, Ryder Miconi, Daniel Powers, Matthew Tilley and John Yoest.
 
Junior Cullen Large led the Tribe after finishing 2-for-4 at the dish with a RBI. Redshirt sophomore Kyle Wrighte, sophomore Hunter Smith and freshman Patrick Ryan chipped in a hit each.
 
Northeastern grabbed an early lead with one run on two hits in the top of the first. Leadoff hitter Charlie McConnell started the frame with a double down the right field line. After the first two outs, Nick Fanneron hit another double down the right line to plate McConnell, giving NU a 1-0 advantage.
 
The Huskies scored again behind a two-out run in the top of the third. Following the first two outs, Cam Hanley hit a single through the right side and swiped second base. The next batter, Nick Fanneron plated Hanley behind a single down the right line, putting NU ahead 2-0.
 
Sophomore starter Bodie Sheehan went on to retire the side in order in the next couple of innings. He retired the side on strikeouts in the fourth and managed two fly outs and a strike out looking in the fifth inning.
 
However, NU used the long ball to pad its lead in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Max Burt sent a solo shot to left field to lift the Huskies to a 3-0 advantage.
 
The Tribe was able to muster its first run of the contest in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Ryan hit a single through the right side, before pinch hitter Owen Socher drew a walk. Large then belted a two-out RBI single up the middle for a 3-1 affair.
 
Nick Brown stepped on the mound in the top of the ninth and retired the Northeastern side in order, notching two groundouts and a strikeout swinging to keep it a two-run game. In the home half of the ninth, Charles Ameer drew a one-out walk in an attempt to start a rally, but the Huskies recorded the next two outs to seal the victory.
 
Sheehan was charged with his fourth loss of the year. He tossed eight innings with eight strikeouts and three runs on six hits.
 
Brian Christian was tabbed with his sixth win of the season. Christian twirled seven shutout innings with just three hits allowed. Andrew Misiaszek picked up his third save after fanning two batters and limiting the Tribe to one run on two hits in the last two innings.
 
The Tribe concludes the regular season with a trip to CAA rival Hofstra for a three-game set next weekend. The series begins with a doubleheader on May 19 at 12 p.m. and concludes with a single game on May 20 again at 12 p.m.
 
The CAA Baseball Championships start up the following week in Wilmington, N.C., on May 24-27.
