TOWSON, Md. (April 7, 2017)—The William & Mary lacrosse team opened its Colonial Athletic Association slate with a 14-11 setback at No. 14 Towson on Friday evening.
How it Happened
Although Towson (8-4, 1-1) owned a narrow 5-4 edge late in the first half, the Tigers broke the game open with an 8-2 run en route to securing the league victory.
W&M (3-9, 0-1) outscored TU in the second half, 7-6, and finished the game with a 4-0 run but was unable to overcome a seven-goal deficit midway through the second half.
Standout Performances
Senior
Lindsey Jenks led the Tribe offensively with four points (3g, 1a), while junior
McKinley Wade added three goals. Sophomore
Eloise Gagnon also found the back of the cage twice.
Freshman
Meredith Hughes continued her outstanding play on draws and posted a game-high eight DC, an impressive total that is just two shy of the single-game school record she registered earlier this season in the win at Cal.
Senior
Abby Junior led the squad defensively with three caused turnovers and five ground balls.
Inside the Numbers
W&M owned a 15-11 advantage in draw controls but was edged in ground balls (23-22) and committed nine more turnovers (24-15). Additionally, Towson outshot W&M, 33-25.
The Opposition
Caitlyn Montalbano (6g, 1a) and Samantha Brookhart (3g, 4a) led Towson with seven points apiece, while Natalie Sulmonte added six draw controls and three assists.
Notes
In addition to outscoring Towson in the second half, 7-6, W&M outscored the Tigers 5-1 during the final 12:42 … Jenks recorded her fourth consecutive hat trick … All three of her goals came in the first half … Hughes posted her seventh straight game with at least three draw controls … She is averaging 4.9 DC per game during the impressive stretch … Her eight draw controls ranks tied for the third-best effort in school history … Towson is the fifth Tribe opponent this season that garnered a national ranking at some point during the 2017 campaign … Towson improved to 15-8 all-time against W&M and has won the last nine matchups.
