CHICAGO (April 8, 2017)—The William & Mary men's gymnastics team won the 2017 Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship with its best performance of the season at Illinois-Chicago on Saturday afternoon.
W&M claimed the team title for the fifth time in school history with a season-best 404.7 and was followed by Navy (402.55), Army (392.45), Springfield (392.2) and UIC (384.55).
Although the Tribe trailed Navy after four rotations, 270.75-268.15, it took a 2.2-point lead after earning a 70.2 on vault and then secured the victory on parallel bars.
As a team, W&M claimed the top team scores on pommel horse (66.8, season high), rings (67.35) and vault (70.2).
Highlighting the Tribe's individual performances was a trio of gymnasts who claimed individual event titles – sophomore
Jacopo Gliozzi (pommel horse, 15.1); sophomore
Peter Makey (rings, 13.8); senior
Neal Courter (vault, 14.35). Gliozzi's impressive score set a school record on pommel horse, while Makey earned a career high and Courter posted a season best in their respective events.
In total, 10 Tribe standouts combined to garner 14 all-conference accolades in various events, while
Mike Powell was honored as the ECAC Coach of the Year and senior
Rob Meyer was selected as the ECAC Senior Gymnast of the Year.
In addition to winning the vault title, Courter placed second on floor (14.0) and high bar (13.75).
Meyer also earned three all-conference honors by tying for second on parallel bars (14.15), tying for fifth on pommel horse (13.5) and placing sixth on rings (13.5).
