WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Rookie
Patrick Ryan registered the William & Mary baseball team's second straight walk-off RBI single to complete a three-game sweep of CAA foe James Madison, 7-6, on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, The Tribe moves to 22-20 overall and 7-5 in league play, while the Dukes slide to 18-21, 3-12 in conference action.
Junior
Cullen Large produced an incredible performance after finishing 5-for-5 with a RBI and a double to pace the offense. Senior
Ryder Miconi, sophomore
Owen Socher and Ryan all tallied two hits apiece. Miconi drove in a pair of runs, while Ryan plated the aforementioned game-winning run.
Senior
Daniel Powers tossed seven innings for the Tribe with two strikeouts and five runs on 10 hits. Classmate
Chase Bailey garnered his first win of the season as he fanned two batters and allowed just one run on four hits in two solid innings of relief.
Both teams exchanged blows with a run scored in the first inning. JMU pushed across its first run on a one-out RBI double down the left field line by Brett Johnson. In the home half of the first, back-to-back singles up the middle from Socher and Large set the table. Miconi then put the ball in play to bring Socher home for a 1-all tie.
A tandem of Socher and Large got back in the action to give the Tribe a one-run advantage in the bottom of the third. Socher hit a leadoff single to left center and then stole second base. Large followed up on the next at bat with a RBI single to right center, putting W&M up 2-1.
JMU used the long ball to erase the Tribe's one-run advantage in the top of the fourth. After a two-out walk and single, Matt Dipasupil laced a three-run homer to left field to provide the Dukes a 4-2 lead.
The Dukes extended their margin the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, Adam Sisk got into scoring position on a double through the left side. Zach Tondi was intentionally walked on the next at bat, before Dipasupil put JMU ahead 5-2 behind a RBI single through the right side.
W&M wasted little time in trimming the deficit with a run scored in the home half of the fifth. Large dialed up a one-out double to left center, before advancing to third courtesy of a groundout. On the next at bat, Minconi drove in Large with a single up the middle to create a 5-3 affair.
The Tribe continued to rally after knotting up the game on a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Pinch hitter
Nick Butts drew a walk to lead off the frame. Large belted a one-out single down the right field line and advanced to second on throwing error in right field. W&M then scored its two runs on back-to-back wild pitches for a 5-all tie.
The seesaw affair continued in the ninth inning as the Dukes regained the advantage with one on three hits in the top of the frame. JMU loaded the bases with just one out, and Tondi hit a RBI single through the right side to break the tie. Nonetheless, the Tribe converted a 463-double play to hold the score at 6-5 in favor of JMU.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Green and Gold used two hits and an error to plate its pair of runs and record the third weekend sweep of 2017. Large started the rally with a leadoff double down the right line and went on to swipe second base. Junior
Ryan Hall then moved Large to third on a grounder. On the next at bat, Miconi forced a walk and a wild pitch bumped him to second.
The next batter, sophomore
Hunter Smith reached on an error by the shortstop, which also allowed Large to cross home plate. After the second out, Smith stole second base and redshirt sophomore
Kyle Wrighte drew another walk. Hall then delivered the second consecutive walk-off by singling through the right side for the 7-6 conference triumph.
Matt Marsili was charged with the loss as logged two innings with three K's and two runs, one of them earned, on three hits.
The Tribe concludes mid-week play with a trip to in-stat rival George Mason on Wednesday, April 26. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
