Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Tribe Lax Falls at No. 17 Stanford, 17-13

PALO ALTO, Calif. (March 8, 2017)—The William & Mary lacrosse team outscored No. 17 Stanford in the second half but fell to the Cardinal, 17-13, at Cagan Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Although W&M (1-5) outscored Stanford (5-2) by a pair of goals in the final 30 minutes, it was unable to overcome an 8-1 Cardinal run that spanned both halves.

Junior McKinley Wade led the Tribe with a career-high five goals, while senior Shannon Quinn (2g, 1a) and sophomore Eloise Gagnon (2g, 1a) both added three points apiece.

Junior Cameron MacDonald and freshman Meredith Hughes totaled four draw controls apiece, while senior Abby Junior led the squad defensively with three caused turnovers and three ground balls to go with a pair of draw controls.

Stanford outshot W&M, 36-25, totaled eight more ground balls (19-11) and owned a narrow edge in draw controls (17-15).

The matchup was closely contested early as the teams were tied at 2-2 with 21:55 showing in the first half. Wade (23:43) and Ryan (21:55) provided the Green & Gold's early scores.

However, Wade's second goal of the opening stanza (17:01) was the Tribe's only other score during the remainder of the first half as Stanford closed the frame with a 7-1 run to take a 9-3 advantage to the locker room.

Although Stanford struck first in the second half to cap a pivotal 8-1 stretch, the Tribe responded by scoring four of the next five goals to narrow the margin to 11-7 with 21:33 remaining. Wade scored twice during the run (27:02, 24:28), while senior Lindsey Jenks (27:43) and Quinn (21:33) also added goals.

After the Cardinal pushed the margin back to six with back-to-back scores, the Green & Gold countered with three unanswered goals – coming from junior Danielle Palmucci (14:24), Quinn (11:35) and Gagnon (8:26) – to cut the gap to 13-10 with 8:26 remaining.

That was as close as W&M was able to get the rest of the way, however, as the Cardinal responded with back-to-back goals before the teams traded scores five times down the stretch.

Kelsey Murray led Stanford with five points (3g, 2a), while Elizabeth Cusick totaled a team-high four goals and Genesis Lucero added a game-high seven draw controls.

The Tribe will return to action when it plays at Cal on Saturday at noon (PST).
