Jenks’ Game-Winning Goal Propels Tribe Lax Past Cal, 19-18

BERKELEY, Calif. (March 11, 2017)—Freshman Meredith Hughes set a single-game school record for draw controls (10) and senior Lindsey Jenks scored on a free position shot with just 0:06 remaining to lift the William & Mary lacrosse team to an exciting 19-18 victory at Cal on Saturday afternoon.

After charging back from a three-goal deficit in the first half, W&M (2-5) built a three-goal margin of its own with less than five minutes remaining before a score by Cal's Susie Ropp knotted the count at 18-18 with 1:08 left. However, sophomore Hannah Ryan won the ensuing draw, and following a W&M timeout, Jenks recorded the game-winner in the closing seconds.

The Tribe utilized a balanced attack, as 10 different players found the back of the cage. Senior Shannon Quinn led the way with four goals, while juniors McKinley Wade and Danielle Palmucci totaled three goals apiece. Junior Abby Corkum (2g, 2a) and sophomore Holly Hager (2g) also tallied multiple scores.

Senior Abby Junior continued her outstanding season with another terrific performance and equaled a career high with five caused turnovers and set a career best with six ground balls. The Wayne, Pa., native entered the week ranked among the nation's top 10 in both statistical categories.

Hughes' 10 draw controls broke the program's previous single-game record of nine set by Molly Wannen at Old Dominion in 2011. The impressive effort helped the Green & Gold post a decisive 23-16 advantage in the critical statistical category.

Although W&M got on the scoreboard first with a goal by sophomore Eloise Gagnon less than two minutes into the contest, Cal (1-6) responded with four unanswered goals.

While the Bears still led by three, 8-5, with 11:57 remaining in the opening half, the Tribe rattled off a pivotal 10-1 run that covered both stanzas to build a 15-9 lead.

Despite a 6-2 Cal run, the Tribe still led by three, 18-15, following a goal by Palmucci off an assist from Corkum with 7:01 left in regulation. However, the Bears responded with three late scores to tie the count before Jenks' late game heroics.

Jena Fritts led Cal with six goals, while Ropp totaled six points on five goals and an assist.

The Tribe will return to action when it plays at Old Dominion on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
