College Park, Md. – The William & Mary baseball team had its three-game winning streak snapped by Maryland in a high-scoring 9-8 defeat on the road Tuesday afternoon. The Tribe are now 6-5 after the setback, while the Terrapins improve to 5-5.
The Green and Gold had a well-balanced attack during the contest as five players notched multiple hits. Senior
Charles Ameer paced the Tribe on a 3-for-5 outing. Classmate
Ryder Miconi had a double and two runs to go along with his 2-for-4 performance, while junior
Ryan Hall, sophomore
Hunter Smith and freshman
Brandon Raquet posted two hits apiece.
Junior
Cullen Large drove in three runs and recorded a double. Redshirt sophomore
Kyle Wrighte registered his second homer of the season to compliment a three RBI showing.
The Tribe's offense set the tone for a shootout with a big six-run inning in the top of second, making it the most runs scored in a single frame this season. Raquet drew a one-out walk and Ameer followed with a single up the middle. After the second out, Wrighte smashed a three-run homer to left field. W&M recorded back-to-back singles and a walk to juice the bases, before Large belted a three RBI double to right center, giving the Tribe a 6-0 lead.
However, the Terps kept pace with a four-run rally in the bottom half of the inning. Brandon Gum led off with a hit by pitch and made it home on consecutive singles. With two outs, Kevin Biondic hit a two RBI single scored the next pair of runs. Biondic would advance to third courtesy of a double and scored on a wild pitch, trimming the Tribe's margin to 6-4.
Both offenses cooled down until the sixth inning as the Terrapins registered three runs to claim the lead. Madison Nickens hit a leadoff single and advanced to third after a double by Kevin Smith. With one out, Zach Jancarski provided another double for Maryland to score Nickens and Smith. On the next at bat, Nick Dunn singled to plate Jancarski, lifting Maryland to a 7-6 advantage.
Maryland scored another run to extend their lead in the bottom seventh. With two outs, the Terps loaded the bases and pushed a run across behind a hit by pitch, giving them a 8-6 margin.
Both teams exchanged runs in the eighth inning. For W&M, back-back singles put a runner in scoring position. A ground ball advanced Raquet to third base and he scored on a wild pitch. Nonetheless, the Terps responded in the bottom half with a RBI single for a 9-7 affair in their favor.
With three outs remaining, the Tribe battled to the last at bat to prolong the contest. Miconi smacked a leadoff double to right center, before Smith would bring him home on a one-out single up the middle. Raquet followed up with a single to short stop, but on the next at bat Ameer reached on a fielder's choice and Smith was tagged at third base. The Terps then recorded a strikeout to close out the game.
Senior
John Yoest was tacked with the loss as he tallied two strikeouts and three earned runs on three hits in 0.2 innings. Tayler Stiles earned the win for the Terrapins with one strikeout in one inning, and Ryan Selmer claimed the save as he allowed only one run on three hits through the final two innings.
The Tribe return to Plumeri Park tomorrow (March 8) after completing a five-game road stretch. W&M will host ACC opponent Virginia Tech as the first match of an eight-game homestand. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
